The oldest LEGO sets, in terms of number of pieces, have been taken over traditionally by LEGO Star Wars and LEGO Creator sets but there’s a new The LEGO Ninjago Movie set that has joined the list with Ninjago City (70620). It is currently the third largest LEGO product LEGO ever made, with 4,867 pieces. The retail price is $299.99.
The instructions are divided in three separate booklets that represent the three levels of Ninjago. City. The first book lets you build The Old World. The second book creates The Street. The final book assembles The High-Rise.

Technically, LEGO has included 16 minifigures but there’s also a sweep robot and couple of mannequins so I would add three more to the number. The minifigures are equally divided between the levels of Ninjago City. Sally, Kai and Mother Doomsday are the first levels. The second level features Severin Black, Mother Doomsday, Tommy, Guy, and Juno. The final level includes Lloyd Garmadon, the Green Ninja Suit Misako and Jay as well as Officer Noonan and the Shark Army Gunner.
Kai’s new red school outfit would look great as a City outfit. The jacket is worn with a white shirt. He has a double-sided appearance with a serious expression on one side and a smile the other. The new design of the brown hairpiece was introduced in TLNM sets. Kai’s accessory is a croissant.
Jamanakai Villager is an older resident who wears a tan-colored and blue outfit. His face is stern. He also has mutton chops. He wears a pannier between his head & torso. It also contains a frog. He completes his look by adding a straw hat to his look and a cane.
Sally is a young girl with blue eyes who wears a dark robe and has some dirt marks. Her face is simple, freckled, and smiley. Her accessory is a green, wild frog she received from the Jamanakai Villager.
Ivy Walker is another resident. She is dressed in a Qipao-like outfit. It’s white with some green bird designs and a green and red stitching. The bottom of the gown extends down to her legs. Her head is double-sided with a sincere, scared look on the other. Her accessory is a jewel made of diamonds.
Konrad is a fisherman. He wears a blue, generic robe. He wears a neck brace that holds his straw-hat. His face shows him with a beard and he has Luke’s hair piece. He has a spear, and a fish as his accessories.
Severin Schwarz is Crab Kitchen’s head chef. His robe is dark red with a crab print on the chest and back. There’s also printing of a dirty apron that goes down to the legs. His face printing shows him with a handlebar moustache. Finally he wears a white chef’s hat.
Mother Doomsday runs Doomsday Comix. His comic book style is very similar to the Comic Book Guy from the Simpsons. He sports a themed sandblue shirt, and appears to be a Galidor lover. He has a full facial hair and a ponytail.
Tommy is a fan of the Green Ninja and he’s seen wearing a shirt featuring Lloyd. There’s also some letters that spell out Nemanja which is another Serbian name and is based of the designer’s son. He has a double-sided head which we’ve seen before in other sets. His hair is long, straight and curly.
Guy is a wealthy executive who prefers high-end clothing. This is represented by the bright pink designer shirt, and the silver shades. Guy also has a few printed money tiles as accessories to make him stand out.
Juno is a fashionista and wears a purple floral blouse with large bows at the back. Her face is double-sided. One side has sunglasses, while the other side is happy. Her accessory is an umbrella.
Lloyd Garmadon looks exactly the same as the minifigure in the Ninjago City Chase (70607)He wears dark green pants and a dark green hoodie. He has a dual-sided face, with green eyes and smiles on both sides.
The Green Ninja Suit we’ve also seen before in previous sets. The only thing different with this one is that it has a trans-black head piece to substitute with Lloyd’s head for when he changes into the suit.
Misako is Lloyd’s mom and she wears a green jacket over a light blue shirt and brown pants. She has a cute winking expression on one side and a more serious expression on the other. She has a brand new orange hairpiece with red cutsticks.
Jay also appears in this set and he’s in his blue ninja outfit. He has a double-sided appearance with an angry expression one side and nervous smile the other. Kusarigama is his accessory.
Officer Noonan is an Ninjago Citypublic servant. It appears she has a new uniform for police with radio printing. If you look closely, there’s also printing of the Super Secret Police insignia which is from The LEGO Movie. Her face printing shows her wearing lipstick and sunglasses. Her accessory? A megaphone.
Finally, we have a Shark Army Gunner. He is exactly the same minifigure that you saw in the Manta Ray Bomber (70609) has the only difference that he has a fish fire as an accessory.
Level 1 – The Old World
Ninjago, I’ve already mentioned, is my favorite. CityIt can be easily divided into three levels, each with many details. Book 1 begins at the Old City and the whole set sits on top of a dark gray 32×32 baseplate. The first set of bags lets you create a create a stable base of what’s to come. This layout makes use of wedge plates.
The next set of bags is used mainly for the water and there are two bags that are just filled with trans-light blue 1×2 tiles. In total, there are 219 water tiles used which doesn’t look like it but they’re all there. This part is tedious but very rewarding once it’s done. We’ve only started with the set but I’m impressed with what I’m seeing already.
The third set of bags doesn’t really give any interesting details but after the fourth set of bags, we finally have our first structure. There’s a small storage and repair facility for the Sweep maintenance robot but the most detail is on the outside of the building. There are some new 2×2 half tile pieces used in combination with some cheese slopes that are used for the siding. In front of Sweep’s room is a small dock made from 1×1 beam cylinders and some Technic parts.
There’s also a bridge that goes over the canal which the build continues over to the fifth bags. Some pieces have been sloping to show the small rock formation that the bridge is built. Gray neck brackets were used by the designers for some details on the bridge’s front. Two new pieces from the green artist palette were used to make lily pads underneath the canal brigde.
The elevator that takes you up to Ninjago’s top is at the beginning CityThe backside of the bridge also has a securing point. It is held in position by toothed bars.
Between the bridge and Sweep’s room is a fish market. There’s an interesting use of some black crowbars that attaches to a Technic flex tube used for the market’s awning. On the back is a box containing fish. On the front is a sign and a phone. A small area is available above the market for a tea party.
Finally, there’s a little boat that Konrad rides to catch some fish and crabs. It’s basically a wooden boat with a small cabin in the back.
Level 2 – The Streets
Ninjago City’s next level includes the Streets. Here you will find many local shops, restaurants, and cafes. Crab Kitchen is our first stop at this level. It is also the largest shop. It is located at the corner and has a main color scheme of red and black. The brick-built crab can be seen above the entrance as the restaurant logo. One of the more interesting techniques is putting some 1×1 trans-orange round tiles inside the 1x2x5 trans-clear column piece for some wall decoration. OCD is a disorder that makes it difficult for tiles to be aligned correctly.
The main attraction is the grill, which you can turn outside by turning the crank. Two crabs are in the grill; one is raw, and the other is cooked. This is a simple, yet effective feature.
To the right of the Crab Kitchen is a working ATM that has 13 1×2 printed money tiles inside. You can push out some money using the lever on the back side that isn’t intrusive and it works great.
The ATM is just next to the comic shop. It is my favorite shop in Ninjago. City. The large Comics sign will be the first thing that you see. It is made from a combination of tiles, bricks, plates, and other materials. There are some 1×1 printed plates that are used for the i and the s. The result looks great and is actually legible considering how small the lettering is.
Stickered tiles are available at the Comics Store that can be used for trading cards. You will find a few copies, including the Starfarer on the back wall. LEGO Ninjago Character Encyclopedia: Updated & Expanded. The last wall contains a few microfigures which are action figures. Believe! is one of the most hilarious things in the store. The LEGO Movie cat poster is on the wall.
The opposite end of the level is where you will find the second level of the elevator. The first side contains a place to store movie posters which can be swapped easily. The rest of the posters can be hidden behind the wall to keep them out of view.
You will find a boutique shop above the Crab Kitchen that sells high-end items like smartphones, hats, and other accessories. A couple of mannequins There’s also a little M-Tron sign there for some reason. The shop has a curved layout so there’s a new trans-clear window piece that is utilized.
A small enclosure is located just across the walkway from the boutique where a cherry tree can grow. It uses a simple and effective method to create a branch. It uses pink, white, or dark pink pieces to create the cherry blossom look.
Level 3 – The High-Rise
The rooftop sushi bar is located on the third level. It’s actually one of more popular gimmicky conveyor belt sushi restaurants. The conveyor is made up of 1×2 TechnicPins and beams that work quite well and can easily be turned by the dial in the middle. The conveyor has a small station for the sushi chef. The restaurant is so exclusive that there’s only three tables and three counter seats for patrons. A brick-built puffer fish and an squid are placed at the roof’s side.
Next to the restaurant is Lloyd and his mom’s apartment. It is quite small, with some bunk beds. The top shelf houses books and toys. Lloyd also has a secret area where his green Ninja suit can be attached.
A lower bathroom is located in the center tower. This area can be removed to reveal a secret area to hold a chef’s hat and moustache. I wonder who’s costume this could be.
The LEGO Ninjago Movie Ninjago City (70662)It is truly enormous. I don’t have any buildings to compare it to but I can confidently say this is easiest the largest building I have. It’s hard to scale the set as you have to see it in person to appreciate its size. What’s nice about Ninjago CityIt has some Technic pin connectors to attach to existing modular sets which is what I’ve heard rumors of even before the set was announced.
The three levels will appeal to both adults and children. When I first saw the set, it immediately caught my attention. It has a cyberpunk vibe. Although this is a Ninjago set, you wouldn’t think that it is considering that there are only two ninja minifigures in the set and one of those two is just a suit.
Although the price tag of $299.99 may seem high, it is actually only $0.06 per piece considering that the item has 4,867 pieces. Ninjago offers many new parts. CityThey can be used in custom builds but they look great as-is.
